{"id":45102,"date":"2025-11-27T11:45:16","date_gmt":"2025-11-27T11:45:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gsma.com\/solutions-and-impact\/gsma-open-gateway\/?p=45102"},"modified":"2025-12-03T17:21:10","modified_gmt":"2025-12-03T17:21:10","slug":"qatar-mobile-operators-launch-anti-fraud-apis-through-gsma-open-gateway-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gsma.com\/solutions-and-impact\/gsma-open-gateway\/qatar-mobile-operators-launch-anti-fraud-apis-through-gsma-open-gateway-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"Qatar\u00a0Mobile Operators Launch Anti-Fraud APIs Through GSMA Open Gateway Initiative\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Ooredoo\u00a0and Vodafone Qatar\u00a0collaborate to provide developers with powerful identity verification tools<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ooredoo\u00a0and Vodafone\u00a0today announced the commercial launch of new network\u00a0technologies in\u00a0Qatar\u00a0designed to\u00a0combat digital fraud.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Delivered through the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsma.com\/solutions-and-impact\/gsma-open-gateway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GSMA Open Gateway initiative<\/a>,&nbsp;the&nbsp;CAMARA-standardised Application Programmable Interfaces (APIs) will give developers simple, secure tools to protect consumers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mwcdoha.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MWC25 Doha<\/a>,&nbsp;Ooredoo&nbsp;and Vodafone Qatar&nbsp;outlined the release of CAMARA-standardised&nbsp;Number Verification and SIM&nbsp;Swap&nbsp;APIs for developers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initiative responds to a growing national challenge: as Qatar\u2019s digital economy accelerates, online fraud has increased in line with global trends.&nbsp;Since 2024,&nbsp;Qatar\u2019s&nbsp;central bank&nbsp;has been&nbsp;running&nbsp;a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbq.qa\/en\/personal\/fraud-awareness\/cb-safe\/list\/phishing-scams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">national campaign to tackle financial phishing attempts<\/a>,&nbsp;aiming at raising awareness about the dangers of financial fraud and how to prevent falling a victim of these,&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moci.gov.qa\/en\/about-the-ministry\/anti-money-laundering-and-terrorism-financing\/reporting-suspicious-transactions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Qatar Financial Information Unit<\/a>&nbsp;has a specialised wing&nbsp;tasked with combating&nbsp;digital fraud.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Worldwide,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gasa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GASA<\/a>&nbsp;estimates that criminals&nbsp;scammed&nbsp;more than&nbsp;$1&nbsp;trillion from victims last year, further emphasising the need for the mobile industry to work together with online banks and retailers through global standardised technology initiatives to tackle the issue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Network&nbsp;APIs&nbsp;Available Now&nbsp;for Developers<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;operators are now providing developers&nbsp;with two&nbsp;APIs to support consumer protection and fraud prevention:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>SIM Swap\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/camaraproject.org\/sim-swap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>API<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0(Available Now):<\/strong>\u00a0Monitors and detects changes in the SIM card associated with a mobile number. It provides\u00a0developers\u00a0with insights into whether a SIM card has been swapped recently, either by returning a timestamp of the last change or a yes\/no response for a defined period (e.g., the last 24 hours).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Number Verify\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/camaraproject.org\/number-verification\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>API<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0(Available Now):<\/strong>\u00a0Enables\u00a0enterprises\u00a0to seamlessly\u00a0check if the mobile number of a device accessing an online service or app matches the one provided by the customer.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Henry Calvert, Head of Networks, GSMA, said:&nbsp;<em>\u201cBy giving developers easier, secure access to the rich network functionality of mobile networks, we can also use network intelligence in the fight against fraud and\u202fscams.\u202fA key part\u202fof this is ensuring\u202fnew APIs are\u202finteroperable\u202fso banks and online retailers can interact with mobile operators\u202fin a&nbsp;standardised\u202fway, wherever they are in the world.\u202fWe\u2019ve\u202falready seen the results\u202fother country\u202fmobile operators and banks have achieved through SIM Swap and Number Verification\u202fand look forward to building on these foundations\u202fin Qatar.\u201d<\/em>\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thani Al Malki, Chief Business Officer, Ooredoo Qatar, said:<em>&nbsp;\u201cDevelopers are at the heart of every digital service used today, and giving them direct access to network-level intelligence is a major leap forward.
