As part of the GSMA Mobile IoT Initiative, the GSMA recently hosted an ad-hoc 3GPP RAN working group meeting series to accelerate the standardisation of Narrow Band (NB) Internet of Things (IoT) technologies.
\nThe event was attended by leading mobile operators, OEMs, chipset, module and infrastructure companies who discussed the progress of the NB-IoT technology that will be finalised for the release of 3GPP Release 13 and the next official 3GPP RAN meetings.
\nLow Power Wide Area (LPWA) technologies in licensed spectrum can be deployed in a simplified and cost-effective manner, without sacrificing key customer requirements, such as battery lifetime and security. NB technology will provide improved indoor coverage, support a massive number of low throughput devices, low device cost, low device power consumption and optimized network architecture.
\nAs part of LPWA, NB-IoT is an emerging area of the Internet of Things and represents a huge market opportunity as the IoT scales. By virtue of using secure, licensed spectrum, operators are in a position to provide connectivity for a new generation of connected devices, thereby enabling a wave of new opportunities for companies operating in the IoT.
