Managing and optimising the\u00a0interconnection\u00a0between\u00a0edge\u00a0nodes\u00a0on different networks\u00a0plays a critical role\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0efficient operation of\u00a0MEC enabled\u00a0applications, where\u00a0the\u00a0application\u00a0users will\u00a0inevitably\u00a0connect and\u00a0interact over different networks.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Deutsche Telekom, Telef\u00f3nica, and MobiledgeX<\/span><\/b>\u00a0set out\u00a0to address this challenge.\u00a0In a\u00a0Telco\u00a0Edge\u00a0Cloud trial, they successfully\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0the capability to manage end-to-end latency in distributed telco edge cloud computing resources interconnected via Quality of Service (QoS) optimised operator networks.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Using the MobiledgeX\u00a0Edge-Cloud\u00a0platform\u00a0to\u00a0provide\u00a0unified access to\u00a0Telefonica and\u00a0Deutsche\u00a0Telekom\u2019s\u00a0telco edge cloud\u00a0resources,\u00a0trial partner\u00a0<\/span>Continental<\/span><\/b>\u00a0was\u00a0able to easily deploy their service and run it with\u00a0the stable and predictable latency required\u00a0for efficient\u00a0operation\u00a0and for an\u00a0outstanding user experience.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The trial is an\u00a0industry-first\u00a0demonstration of a\u00a0managed interconnection\u00a0of the telco edge cloud assets of two operators at one location to enable an optimised user experience for a specific use case.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The application backend was deployed in the cloudlets of Deutsche Telekom and Telefonica to serve each operator\u2019s customers respectively. Both instances were interconnected based on a managed connection using the industry standardised IPX network (IP Exchange). This interconnection was configured to ensure low latency and reduced jitter, thereby preserving the edge service interconnection from congestion or traffic peaks.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Continental\u2019s\u00a0Collision\u00a0Warning\u00a0Use Case<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Continental<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0provides intelligent solutions to\u00a0<\/span>thei<\/span>r<\/span> customers for connected and smart mobility. They demand reliable state-of-the-art solutions not only for their services today but also for future scenarios around autonomous mobility.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Intelligent transport services hinge on the efficient, reliable, and real-time distribution of data between vehicles, vulnerable road users, road infrastructure and applications.\u00a0One specific challenge relates\u00a0to the everyday\u00a0situation where road users are connected to edge clouds on different operator networks.\u00a0What is\u00a0required is\u00a0a reliable and optimised end to end low latency to enable this service.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Snigdhayan Mahanta, Product Owner (Cloud Technologies and Solutions), Automotive Technologies from Continental Automotive shared “We are excited to team up with Deutsche Telekom and Telef\u00f3nica and Edge Computing management specialist MobiledgeX to show the value of optimised latency by demonstrating how MEC makes a difference for reliable collision avoiding solutions. Smart Mobility solutions from Continental require reliable and predictable low latency to ensure safe and efficient operation on MEC infrastructure in real-world scenarios. In this trial, we have built a future-proof setup to support our low latency requirements for a smart mobility service. And we are excited that we achieved in this trial a significantly better latency performance than we observed with any alternative setup. This is really encouraging for our development work \u2013 and these findings are an important milestone on the path to delivering intelligent transport services for an autonomous mobility future.\u201d<\/p>\n
