As the mobile industry searches for new sources of growth, the relationships between mobile network operators and tower companies (towercos) could prove to be pivotal. Rather than thinking of towercos as passive landlords, mobile operators need to see these players as essential partners in deploying new capacity, energy management, and the evolution of the network itself. This article explores how the relationship between mobile operators and towerco is shaping the future of the mobile industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By working effectively together, mobile operators and towercos can overcome the financial, planning and energy challenges they face and build better networks (both indoors and outdoors) for end customers. As they can support multiple operators from a single site, towercos benefit from economies of scale that aren\u2019t available to individual telcos.  Regarded by investors as low-risk infrastructure businesses, towercos also have the leeway to amortise capital costs over long periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Europe, for example, outsourcing to neutral host towercos will save the industry \u20ac31 billion between 2019 and 2029 through increased sharing and operational efficiency, according to the European Wireless Infrastructure Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the mobile industry seeks to better monetise 5G, mobile operators and towercos need to move beyond rent negotiations to explore strategic opportunities that will benefit both partners. These opportunities are manifold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delivering more capacity in hot spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Firstly, in many city centres and tourist hot spots, mobile operators don\u2019t have sufficient radio capacity to meet demand during peak periods \u2013 their networks need to be denser, particularly as they employ higher frequency bands in which radio signals don\u2019t travel so far and find it harder to penetrate walls. But densification can be expensive and time consuming, particularly as it is often difficult to identify and then access the optimal sites.  Towercos can do this legwork on behalf of mobile operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In some cases, small cells may be the most practical way to improve mobile connectivity in city centres. To that end, a towerco may acquire the rights to mount antennas on scores of lampposts and then work with individual mobile operators to pinpoint where to establish small cells to best serve their customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enhancing indoor coverage<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A key challenge for any mobile operator is ensuring customers have good coverage indoors, where people spend most of their online time. Towercos increasingly have the expertise required to work closely with building owners to figure how best to overcome insulation, metal casing and other obstacles that can interfere with signals indoors. By acting as a neutral host, a towerco can ensure that multiple mobile operators can offer 5G inside key buildings, such as shopping malls, airports and entertainment venues, as well as office blocks and commercial premises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keeping the electricity flowing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Mobile operators could also benefit from investments by towercos to ensure that base station sites have a continuous supply of energy. Depending on the market, this could involve installing back-up diesel generators, solar panels and battery storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In some cases, towercos may even sell electricity stored in base stations\u2019 batteries back to the grid, further improving the economics of each site. This kind of distributed storage can help grid operators balance supply and demand at peak times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Better communication, more flexibility<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Effective partnerships between mobile operators and towercos depend on a productive and open exchange of information, within the bounds of commercial sensitivities. If towercos know where there are weaknesses in mobile networks today, they are better able to identify sites that will enable operators to address these weaknesses. The job of a towerco is to identify sites that are valuable to as many network operators as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, mobile operators and towercos can work together to address regulatory challenges, such as slow permitting, inconsistent rights-of-way processes, and regulatory frameworks that misclassify infrastructure providers. Joint advocacy by operators and towercos could help to persuade municipalities and governments to be more flexible and move faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stronger partnerships, higher revenues<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In summary, by enabling telcos to cost-effectively densify their networks, towercos can help ensure high quality connectivity is available where demand is greatest. As a result, end users will generate additional traffic, potentially boosting the top line for mobile operators. While towercos focus on selecting the optimum sites for new base stations, telcos can focus on optimising the customer experience and better monetising their services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is, therefore, in the mutual interest of mobile operators and towercos to build stronger, more strategic partnerships. By working closely together, they can strengthen mobile networks and ensure they play a pivotal role in the development of the digital economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
