Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg (pictured<\/em>) revealed the operator plans to expand a 5G mobile edge compute (MEC) initiative launched with Amazon Web Services (AWS) in 2019 to a total of ten cities this year, to make the technology more widely available to developers.<\/p>\n

During an investor conference, Vestberg explained a\u00a0centre launched in Chicago in December 2019 alongside AWS<\/a>\u00a0was a \u201cunique\u201d model which enabled public access for developers to build new apps requiring low latency and high throughput.<\/p>\n

He said the aim is to \u201creplicate to ten sites this year in order to have good coverage of the whole country\u201d, adding \u201cwe have great aspirations together with Amazon that this can be something really different for developers\u201d.<\/p>\n

The CEO noted Verizon is also working with \u201cthe most advanced enterprises\u201d in the US on 5G MEC for private use, which he said will allow companies to better manage factory and in-store workflows using real-time data.<\/p>\n

Verizon received \u201cgood demand and interaction\u201d around its MEC initiatives and expects the segment to begin yielding revenue in 2022.<\/p>\n

Services
\n<\/strong>Vestberg added Verizon still aimed to launch fixed wireless access 5G service in ten cities this year, but is waiting on updated chipsets for new customer equipment.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0nationwide mobile 5G move<\/a>\u00a0using low-band spectrum will initially only offer \u201csmall\u201d performance enhancements over 4G, but Vestberg said the gap will widen over time with \u201cthe evolution of the technology and the software\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
