GSMA Director General visits the Sub-Saharan Africa region

The GSMA Director General, Mats Granryd, and Chief Regulatory Officer, John Giusti visited the Sub–Saharan Africa region from the 13 – 15 January to gain insights on the opportunities and challenges in Kenya and the region at large from the CEOs, Regulator, Central Bank Governor and the Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of ICT. Some of the key topics that were discussed during the meetings included:

  • WRC 2019 Outcome

This took place on November 19 in Sharm El-Sheikh. Delegates took a big step in making high-frequency mmWave spectrum available in bands such as 26 GHz and 40 GHz. Striking a balance between enabling exciting new opportunities with high capacity mmWave 5G and protecting existing radio services. The burgeoning global ecosystem around mmWave spectrum gets a big boost to support the development of affordable services and devices. Looking ahead, WRC-23 will focus on Spectrum & Roadmap for 5G coverage for benefits realization.

This commitment unites CEOs from across industry sectors who are committed to acting ethically in the digital era and delivering what matters most to digital citizens, industry and governments. It captures the key guiding principles business leaders must adhere to keep pace with consumer expectations. It calls on businesses to respect the privacy of digital citizens, handle personal data securely and transparently, take meaningful steps to mitigate cyber threats and ensure everyone can participate in the digital economy as it develops; whilst combatting online harassment. Currently, 80 CEOs have signed the declaration. Mats took the opportunity to invite the CEOs to be signatories and join the movement.

  • MWC Barcelona 2020, 24-27 February

The Director General invited the CEOs to attend this event and also take part in a CEO roundtable that will be hosted by the regional team.

They also got a chance to visit one of the Ecosystem Accelerator programme grantees, Twiga Foods.
