For the sixth year, the GSMA supported ITU International Girls in ICT Day by launching its Tech4Girls programme globally through a series of events at its offices around the world in Atlanta, Barcelona, Beijing, Buenos Aires, Dubai, Hong Kong, and London. The GSMA hosted various activities including high-profile guest speakers from companies across the tech and mobile industries. As a result, 203 girls were impacted from the workshops held globally across regions at the GSMA.
GSMA North America
GSMA North America partnered with The Caribbean Association of National Telecommunication Organizations (CANTO) and Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (TATT) to host a two-day series of Google Home workshops for 60 girls. The girls were selected from three secondary schools in Trinidad and were introduced to the components of a computer (Raspberry Pi) & the construction of connected device (Google Home). This year’s Girls in ICT Day program focused on the theme “Tech Savvy Girls!”.
GSMA London
GSMA London ran several activities for a group of 11 girls from Hurlingham Academy, who visited the GSMA London headquarters for a tour of the office. The participants were introduced to the GSMA programmes including #CaseForChange, Connected Women, IoT and Tech4Girls. They also listened to speeches from several speakers who discussed the exciting roles of women in tech, and ways to select STEM subjects that will help them into the world of tech.
GSMA Barcelona
GSMA Barcelona hosted 23 girls who learned how to use the coding software SonicPi to program and create their own cell phone ringtone. The girls were also exposed to the mathematics involved in the creation of music. Supporting partners included: Mobile World Capital Barcelona Foundation, CaixaBank and Telefonica.
GSMA Latin America
GSMA Latin America hosted a LinkedIn capacity workshop delivered where 35 girls acquired knowledge and digital skills to make the best use of LinkedIn as a tool to generate opportunities for entry into the labor market. The workshop provided practical and functional information, examples of different types of profiles and the possibility of creating an own profile supervised by experts. Supporting partners included: Secretaria de Gobierno de Modernización, Ente Nacional de Comunicaciones – ENACOM (Argentinean Regulator), Plan Nacional de Inclusión Digital of Argentina (Digital Inclusion National Plan of Argentina), Punto Digital de San Miguel and Equals.
GSMA Beijing
GSMA Beijing hosted a workshop for 18 girls that discussed ways to change the future by using 5G+AI, which exposed them to the latest development of ICT technology to refresh their understandings of the mobile industry and support them in the selection of school majors or careers later in life. Supporting partners included: the Computer Science Department of Tsinghua University and No.2 Middle School.
GSMA Hong Kong
GSMA Asia Pacific hosted a robotics automation and coding workshop for 21 student girls at its Hong Kong office. The girls assembled their own robots and learned how to use coding for robotics automation. Supporting partners included: STEMex, the official provider of Engineering for Kids (EFK) from the US, and two local schools – Chiu Sheung School and Kwok Man School in Hong Kong.
GSMA Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA)
GSMA Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA) partnered with the American University of Science and Technology in Beirut to teach a cybersecurity course for 15 girls from local schools with no access and opportunities to work on computers. MENA hosted the event at the American University of Science and Technology in Beirut.
