At the beginning of 2018, I would like to share my thoughts on some of the key themes set to shape our industry over the coming year.

We can expect development of 5G hardware, chipsets and devices to ramp up in 2018, while operators will continue to expand and upgrade their 4G networks to provide an evolutionary path to 5G. There have already been 30 global launches of Mobile IoT networks around the world to date and we expect to see that number grow further this year. Intelligent analytics and voice-activation technologies will be embedded into an increasing array of everyday appliances.

The ability to protect consumer data and ensure privacy will to come to the fore through regulations. This will lead to new tools that enable us to self-manage our information, and increased demand for solutions such as Mobile Connect, which will be deployed in new markets in 2018. Mobile Connect has already been deployed by 62 operators in more than 30 countries and boasts 100 million registered users.

The theme for Mobile World Congress 2018 is ‘creating a better future’, reflecting our industry’s increasing contribution to the SDGs and building a better future for all. We have been showcasing this contribution via our #CaseForChange series and below, you’ll find two of them from the APAC region.

And, finally, I would like to wish you all a prosperous 2018!
Alasdair Grant, Head of Asia Pacific, GSMA
