Nokia looks to public cloud for enterprise RAN partnerships

Nokia has announced separate partnerships with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud and Microsoft to further realise the potential of new network and cloud technologies. The goal is to develop cloud-based 5G radio solutions for enterprise use cases. The partnerships will involve a degree of integration of Nokia’s open RAN, cloud RAN and edge cloud technologies with the cloud infrastructure of the three webscalers.

The partnerships underline the importance of an open and interoperable ecosystem of network and cloud technologies. Part of the significance is that RAN solutions are performance sensitive. Hosting them in the public cloud is a signal that faith in public cloud performance and capabilities is growing.

As 5G drives renewed interest in B2B use cases, these partnerships should help generate new solutions and go-to-market strategies for different industry verticals, expanding the reach of open RAN, cloud RAN and edge cloud technologies. For operators, this means having access to new, enhanced end-to-end solutions provided by network vendors – increasingly important as operators look to deploy new 5G services and capture new B2B opportunities.
