The Internet of Things is generating a huge amount of data that is currently retained in vertical silos. However, a true IoT is dependent on the availability and confluence of rich data sets from multiple systems, organisations and verticals which will usher in the next generation of IoT solutions.

The GSMA is working with the mobile industry to establish an IoT Big Data Ecosystem to make harmonised data sets from multiple sources available to developers and third parties through common APIs.  You can discover more about this in our IoT Big Data API Directory.

A common technical approach to IoT Big Data

harmonised-dataThis document specifies harmonised data models that are approved for use by all the participants of the IoT Big Data Ecosystem Project and must be used by the participants whenever possible.


This document identifies relevant best practices for common enablers in the area of analytics delivered by mobile operators. It aims to accelerate the delivery of such services by leveraging collective experience, and can also help end users of such services who would like to receive consistent results from multiple operators.


Advances in sensors, IoT platforms and mobile communications technologies have led to the emergence of smaller, portable, low cost, mobile-enabled sensors that can measure and report air quality in near real time. “Big Data” capabilities, such as analytics and machine learning, can then be applied to this data and related data sets, such as weather and traffic, to understand the causes and fluctuations in air pollution.
