Industry Leaders To Gather In Cairo For Mobile Money Summit

New GSMA event to focus on convergence of financial and mobile services

Naguib Sawiris, CEO of Orascom Telecom, Christina Gold, CEO of Western Union, Hans Wijayasuriya, Group CEO of Dialog Telekom, Rizza Maniego-Eala, President of Globe Telecom’s G-Xchange, and Dr. Tarek Mohamed Kamel, Egypt’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology, will be among the speakers at the GSMA’s Mobile Money Summit in Cairo, Egypt on May 14th and May 15th. The GSMA is hosting the event in partnership with IFC (International Finance Corporation), which is part of the World Bank, the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor, a global resource for microfinance, and the U.K. Government’s Department for International Development.

A new event dedicated to the convergence of financial and mobile services, the Mobile Money Summit will bring together leading representatives of mobile operators, financial services companies, vendors, regulators and international development institutions and government agencies to debate how mobile money services can be nurtured to the benefit of individuals, companies and national economies. As mobile money services gain momentum around the world, the summit will host conference sessions on new business models, the regulatory hurdles, the development of a global cross-border infrastructure and other pressing issues.

“The Mobile Money Summit is a key element of the GSMA’s strategy to accelerate the convergence of mobile and financial services to the benefit of the world’s mobile phone users of which hundreds of millions live beyond the reach of the traditional banking infrastructure,” said Rob Conway, CEO and Member of the Board of the GSMA, the global trade association for the mobile industry. “By bringing together leading players from across the globe for a series of intensive discussions, the Summit will be a major milestone in the development of both domestic and international mobile money transfer and mobile payment services that migrant workers, business-people and holiday makers will be able to access via their handsets wherever they travel.”
