Brazilian operators leverage GSMA Open Gateway APIs to reduce online fraud

Challenge

In 2023, around 5% of Brazilians (8 million) claimed to have been victims of identity theft and fraud, representing growth of 1.2% versus 2022. Another 19% claim to have “probably” or “possibly” fallen victim to this type of scam. Fraud involving the use of identity to open an account by a scammer is the most concerning among Brazilians (34%).59

Solution

GSMA Open Gateway is a common, open framework between operators to make it easier for developers and cloud providers to build safer apps and services that seamlessly communicate with each other and work for all devices and customers. This is achieved through single access points to mobile networks, known as APIs. In December 2023, Brazil’s three largest operators (Claro, TIM and Vivo) launched three Open Gateway APIs focused on improving digital security:

  • SIM Swap, which checks the last time the SIM card associated with a mobile number changed
  • Number Verify, which enables authentication of a device by the mobile network
  • Device Location, which allows an application to check if a mobile device is in proximity of a given location.

Impact

Operators have reported good traction for all three APIs, but particularly for the SIM Swap API.60 Daycoval (a financial services company in Brazil offering credit to companies and individuals) and Itaú (Brazil’s largest private bank) are among the companies to integrate Open Gateway’s SIM Swap API. This empowers the companies to bolster security in their onboarding procedures by identifying suspicious SIM card activity and thwarting attempts at identity theft.
