NAXA: Digital and spatial technology for anticipatory action in Nepal

Launched in November 2022, the GSMA Innovation Fund for Anticipatory Humanitarian Action backed solutions that leverage mobile digital technology to help anticipate potential humanitarian impacts and enable effective early response. By focusing on the important theme of anticipatory action, the Fund contributes to minimising humanitarian impacts and improving preparedness in the face of sudden-onset crises. This case study shares lessons and outcomes from the project with NAXA.

Illustrated map shows a river flowing through a village, highlighting anticipatory action in Nepal. Homes near a rocky mountain are labeled high-risk, those further away medium-risk, and houses on flat land low-risk amid pine trees, hills, and snowy peaks.

NAXA uses digital and spatial technologies to tackle some of humanity’s most pressing challenges. The project, supported by the GSMA, focused on improving disaster preparedness and anticipatory action in Nepal via DASTAA – NAXA’s all-in-one digital platform designed to strengthen disaster preparedness at both the household and community level. Available as both a mobile and web app, DASTAA combines data technology and local insights to support evidence-based decisions throughout a disaster.

With the support from the Fund, NAXA and its partners have created more than 16,000 customised household risk profiles and early warning alerts, with 127,000 interactive voice response (IVR) messages and 41,000 SMS alerts sent during the monsoon season.
