Scaling AI for SMEs: Insights Into South Africa’s AI Data Governance Environment

This report explores the data governance landscape for artificial intelligence (AI) in South Africa, with a focus on how small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and startups are adopting and deploying AI technologies. It examines the country’s strong legal and policy foundations, including constitutional protections for privacy, robust data protection legislation and a growing body of AI-related frameworks, with a dedicated national AI policy currently under development.
