Network API ventures on the increase

Ericsson and some of the world’s largest telecoms operators have announced the creation of a joint venture to combine and sell network APIs from multiple telecoms service providers to a broad ecosystem of developer platforms. Meanwhile, Vonage and SAP have announced a new agreement to jointly develop digital enterprise applications. Vonage will provide SAP and its enterprise customers with access to its platform of network APIs, including Quality on Demand, Device Location and Number Verification.

Both ventures build on the GSMA’s Open Gateway initiative and highlight the importance of aggregators connecting different sides of the market. Strong participation from both operators and aggregators is also expected at the Infobip Shift developers’ conference, which also includes planned Open Gateway activity from Nokia. Deeper engagement with developers and other distribution partners is key to scaling up the network API opportunity for mobile operators.
