SK Telecom has added AI capabilities to its integrated calling platform, T Phone (now renamed A. Phone). These allow call summaries and real-time translation. The company also unveiled an AI code of conduct to ensure the reliability and stability of the technology’s development. Separately, through its venture-capital arm Wayra, Telefonica has invested in AI startup Perplexity and launched an AI assistant based on Perplexity technology for the premium tier of its pay-TV service, Movistar Plus.
Operators have been using AI for several years and, like most industry verticals, see advancements in AI – particularly generative AI (genAI) – as offering transformational potential for their business in the long run. They are increasingly using AI for service creation and revenue generation, operational efficiencies and enabling more connected networks. According to GSMA Intelligence, around 81% of operators surveyed globally are testing genAI solutions, and most will have deployed genAI in the next year. Networks have been a natural starting place for operators, with momentum here reflected in Fujitsu’s recent launch of an AI-powered application to improve 5G network operations.
