In Zimbabwe, social media has evolved as a powerful tool for digital marketing, communication, and social engagement. It has encouraged the interchange of ideas, allowed people to express their views on different subjects, and brought people from different backgrounds together. Furthermore, social media platforms have become vital for staying up to date on current events, participating in political discourse, and obtaining educational resources. According to recent figures, Zimbabwe has 2.05 million social media users in January 2023, accounting for 12.2% of the population, with the most popular platforms being Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
Zimbabwean women, in particular, face a slew of cybersecurity concerns that jeopardize their safety, privacy, and well-being online. I had the honor of attending the recent Women in ICT Conference, which was organized by the Internet Society of Zimbabwe on March 8, 2024. Women highlighted quite a number of cybersecurity challenges that threaten their safety, privacy, and well-being in the digital realm. It emerged that social media frauds are on the increase, and this is a cause of concern. Cyber frauds on Social Media amongst others include: WhatsApp Hacking, Illegal Forex deals, Creation of fake Facebook Pages or imposter Facebook Pages, Creation of Fake Websites, Social Media Pyramid/Ponzi Schemes and many more. While the expansion of social media in Zimbabwe provides great potential for connectivity and women empowerment, it also introduces cyber security issues that require proactive actions to protect women in cyberspace. This article dissects end-to-end encryption as a technique for safeguarding communication privacy when using these sites.
Understanding how end-to-end encryption protects you.
End-to-end encryption is a security feature that protects data during transmission from source to the recipient, guaranteeing that only authorized parties may access and read it. It is a digital safety tool for online interactions that is utilized by a large number of popular messaging apps. Understanding end-to-end encryption is critical for protecting people’s privacy in an increasingly digital world.
How end-to-end encryption works
When you send a message via an app using end-to-end encryption, your app acts as a cryptographer and encodes your message with a cryptographic key. This process transforms your message into a cipher – a jumble of seemingly random characters that conceal the true essence of your message. This assures that the message is a private transaction between you and your recipient, protected from illegal access by hackers, service providers, or monitoring agencies. If eavesdroppers intercept it, they will see only gibberish and be unable to decode the message without the decryption key. When the message arrives at its destination, the recipient’s app uses the associated decryption key to open it. This decryption key, securely saved on the recipient’s device, is the sole key capable of translating the message and converting the encrypted text back into readable format.
This type of encryption is known as public key, or asymmetric cryptography. Each person communicating using this type of encryption has two encryption keys, one public and one private. You provide your public key with anyone who wishes to communicate securely with you, and they use it to encrypt their messages to you. However, that key cannot be used to decrypt their messages. Only your private key, which you do not share with anyone, can accomplish this.
In practice, you don’t need to worry about sharing keys. Messaging apps with end-to-end encryption manage this behind the scenes. You and the party you are securely talking with only need to use the same app that offer this security service. While end-to-end encryption efficiently secures messages, it is not impervious to all cyberthreats and needs users to actively control their privacy preferences.
With varied levels of protection among services, it often depends on the user to choose messaging apps wisely and opt for those that provide end-to-end encryption by default. As we navigate the complex landscape of digital communication, end-to-end encryption stands as a beacon of privacy and security, empowering individuals to communicate freely without compromising their personal data.
