5G as a key enabler of digital transformation (characteristics and challenges)
- 5G is not just another evolution of cellular technology enhancing mobile broadband capabilities, it is set to transform the world by offering connectivity as a service to anything, at any time and from everywhere
- As 5G starts to position beyond just a network, industry players will embark on multiple track to tap on this “New Oil” and explore what is possible for the next 10 – 20 years
- However, like any expedition to the unknown, there’s unchartered territory which will eventually land a heavy blow (High learning curve) to any explorer’s maiden voyage
- In order to build a sustainable “map”, key industry players who is keen on investing 5G in their digital transformation journey will need to forge value based business relationship across industry in order to ride on the 5G wave
- Technology enable digital transformation, which is anticipated to grow significantly in the coming years. Frost & Sullivan forecasts that it will grow from $147 billion in 2019 to $235 billion in 2023.

Thailand is the first country in ASEAN to launch a 5G commercial service since 2020
- In last June, the Prime Minister of Thailand announced the formation of Thailand 5G Alliance that can help Thailand become a digital center for the entire ASEAN region. depa forms national alliance to drive 5G adoption in Thailand and set strong ambitious to drive industry collaboration.
Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area
- The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (Greater Bay Area) comprises of the two Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macao, and the nine municipalities including Guangzhou, Shenzhen in Guangdong Province. The total area is around 56,000 km2. Total population in the Greater Bay Area is over 86 million and the GDP is USD 1,668.8 billion in 2020. HKSTP has built a thriving I&T ecosystem converging stakeholders from government, industry, academic and research sectors, and curated an extensive range of tailored programmes and initiatives including 5G to accelerate the process from R&D to commercialization.
Indonesia X-CAMP
- The Indonesia X-CAMP owns by XL Axiata in Jakarta is an Innovation Centre built to accelerate the development of IoT ecosystem in Indonesia where IoT players (Startup, Developer, Student, Maker) can develop their products through Testbed Facility and Product Development. The scope expands to 5G as a key enabler for Industry4.0 in Indonesia.
