Building trusted digital ecosystems in ASEAN
As ASEAN countries move from connectivity expansion towards integration, interoperability and intelligent digital transformation, a key factor to achieving regional and digital national ambitions is digital trust. This is the confidence that digital systems, services and the organisations behind them will operate securely, reliably, transparently and accountably while protecting users’ rights and interests. Digital trust has therefore become a strategic delivery mechanism for building digital nations. Countries that build confidence in digital infrastructure, services and institutions will be better placed to convert digitalisation into adoption, innovation, investment and socioeconomic impact.
Trust is deeply connected to the five core components of the GSMA Intelligence Digital Nations Index, enabling them to function effectively and amplifying their economic and social impact. The index therefore serves both as a measure of digital progress and as a lens for assessing the conditions that support trusted, sustainable digital growth.
The key question has extended from whether people can access digital services to whether they can rely on them to be secure, reliable, transparent and accountable. This challenge is becoming increasingly visible through the growth of scams and fraud across ASEAN countries. As AI enables more convincing phishing attacks, deepfakes, voice cloning and digital impersonation, trust increasingly depends on the ability to verify identities, authenticate communications and prevent fraud before harm occurs.
As such, building trusted digital nations will require stronger cooperation between governments, telecoms operators, financial institutions and digital platforms to strengthen confidence in digital interactions and protect citizens from increasingly sophisticated forms of deception.
