Inspiring the Next Generation of Innovators: GSMA Tech4Girls AI Workshop at Georgia State University
On November 2, 2024, young minds gathered at Georgia State University for an unforgettable day of learning, inspiration, and empowerment as GSMA North America hosted a Tech4Girls AI Workshop. This event, part of GSMA’s commitment to supporting young women in exploring technology careers, introduced participants to the exciting world of artificial intelligence. The workshop empowered girls not only to learn about AI but to see themselves as future leaders and creators in the tech space.
Setting the Stage with Powerful Welcome Messages
The day kicked off with a warm welcome by GSMA North America head of region Carlos Bosch, who set the tone for an inspiring and informative day. With opening remarks from key figures such as Sianne Ryder, General Manager of GSMA Services, and Suzatte Reid Mooring, PhD, Professor of Chemistry and Director of Graduate Studies at GSU, the event provided a powerful platform to discuss the value of education and the importance of women’s representation in technology. Also sharing their perspectives were Oduntan Gordon, President of Youth for Humanity, and Marisa Taeis from Verizon, whose inspirational message highlighted the boundless opportunities available to young women in AI and beyond.
Engaging, Hands-On AI Training
The highlight of the day was an AI training session led by Fiona Ryan, a Research Scientist Intern at Adobe and a PhD student in Computer Science. Fiona’s expertise and passion for AI were evident as she guided the girls through various interactive activities that brought AI concepts to life. Participants had the unique opportunity to:
- Chat with a Bot: Understanding how AI can engage in natural conversations with humans and exploring the logic behind chatbots.
- Create Bot Activities in Scratch: Using Scratch, a beginner-friendly programming platform, the girls were able to design their own bot interactions, a fun exercise that brought programming to life.
- Discuss the Ethics of AI: Fiona led a thought-provoking discussion on the ethics of AI, encouraging the girls to think critically about how AI affects society and the responsibilities of those who create it.
- Explore AI vs. Robotics: Fiona distinguished between AI and other robotic technologies, demystifying common misconceptions and highlighting the unique potential of artificial intelligence.
These hands-on activities not only taught practical AI skills but also sparked curiosity, showing the girls that they, too, can become creators and decision-makers in the AI field.
Building a Community of Support and Inspiration
Throughout the day, girls had the chance to connect with each other, building friendships and a sense of community that can often be rare in tech spaces. By meeting industry professionals, professors, and other young women interested in AI, the participants left with new perspectives, friendships, and a network of people invested in their growth.
Looking Forward: Empowering the Future of AI
As the event came to a close, the atmosphere was filled with excitement for what’s next. The Tech4Girls AI Workshop offered a glimpse into the possibilities that lie ahead for these young women, emphasizing that they are more than capable of leading in technology and contributing meaningfully to the world. Events like this are a testament to GSMA’s mission: creating spaces for young women to learn, explore, and ultimately drive the future of telecommunications and technology.
Stay tuned for more Tech4Girls events as GSMA continues its mission to empower young women to dream big and achieve even bigger.
