Improved Customer Experience for the End User

The GSMA eSIM Root Discovery Service delivers an improved customer experience by supporting Mobile Network Operators or Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MNOs / MVNOs) in their rollout of eSIM technology. MNOs / MVNOs can register any new customer profile on the GSMA Root Discovery Service, allowing these profiles to be discovered and downloaded by eSIM enabled mobile phones.
Key benefits of the GSMA eSIM Root Discovery Service
Improved customer experience
- eSIM technology in general supports remote eSIM provisioning over the air.
- The GSMA Root Discovery Service enables devices to discover their new eSIM profiles automatically in the background, the only user action required is confirmation to download the new profile.
- Other popular methods, e.g. QR codes, require the printing, management and distribution of the QR codes and require the user to follow a set procedure to scan them.
Supports IOT devices
- The customer experience with IOT devices is enhanced with the GSMA Root Discovery Service as the device simply contacts the Root Discovery Service on power up to find the location of the associated subscriber profile. No customer action required.
- GSMA Root Discovery Service is perfectly suited for use with small form factor IOT devices with no input mechanism, e.g. dog tracker, remote monitoring cameras.
- The GSMA Root Discovery Service can be used for IOT devices that do not have a camera or screen, the device contacts the Discovery Service on power up and discovers its new profile for download.
Fully digitised eSIM provisioning system
- The eSIM removes the need for specifying, purchasing, storing and distributing plastic SIM cards.
- The GSMA Root Discovery Service removes the need for the printing, storage and distribution of QR codes for eSIM profile access.
- New customer profiles are distributed digitally to the SM-DP+ and the GSMA Root Discovery Service.
- Devices can check for new profiles on power up or on menu selection.
Standardised eSIM provisioning capability, independent of bespoke solutions
- The GSMA eSIM specifications SGP.21 and SGP.22 detail how the GSMA Root Discovery Service is used to allow any eSIM devices to discover the correct SM-DP+, the one that has the customers’ subscription profile.
- The GSMA Root Discovery Service is designed to work with all devices from any manufacturer.
- Some larger mobile phone manufacturers are providing their own eSIM discovery solutions and these work well with the mobile phone manufacturers own devices but do not work with other mobile phone manufacturers devices. Also all MNOs and MVNOs would need to connect to such a bespoke service.
- The heterogeneous ecosystem of IOT devices means that it is unlikely for IOT vendors to implement bespoke solutions as there are so many vendors, which would cause a significant overhead for the vendors and the MNOs.
