Connecting High-Speed Rail Passengers – China Mobile

When travelling on China’s high-speed trains, passengers often disconnect from the dedicated wireless network due to intermittent coverage, signal interference, their device’s configuration and/or network overload. To address these issues, China Mobile has developed and launched a “5G-A High-Speed Rail VIP acceleration” package on the “Guangdong-Shenzhen-Hong Kong” high-speed rail link.

The solution introduces a new AI algorithm into the packet core network that can accurately distinguish high-speed rail passengers from normal users. Radio frequency selection policies (RFSP) are then used to preferentially assign dedicated network infrastructure to high-speed rail passengers.

China Mobile says the high-speed rail acceleration package enables business travellers to participate smoothly in cloud video conferencing and Tencent meetings on the high-speed rail link. Entertainment services are also enhanced, so that players of online games, such as Honor of Kings, enjoy more responsive connections.

China Mobile says the acceleration solution is set to benefit 20 million passengers by the end of 2025. From a commercial perspective, the operator regards the pay-as-you-go, value-added service model as “a new paradigm of value co-creation between communication operators and transportation scenarios.”
