Online platforms are key enablers of the digital economy which they have profoundly shaped over the course of the past two decades. They perform a wide set of functions crucial to our economy ranging from marketplaces to search engines and application distribution platforms. Platforms’ increasing strength and their pivotal gatekeeper role pose a number of challenges that the Commission has tried to address with its proposed Regulation to promote fairness and transparency in the relationships among platforms, business and consumers. With a focus on introducing transparency requirements for platforms and a redress mechanism to correct misconduct, the Commission’s proposal has sparked an interesting and rich debate.

How are platforms abusing their gatekeeper role? Is the regulation what the sector needs Does it go far enough to correct platforms’ behaviours? These are some of the questions that will be discussed during the GSMA Mobile Meetings Series roundtable that will bring together a group of 20 selected stakeholders including EU decision-makers and industry experts for an invitation only discussion under the Chatham House rule.
