A new GSMA paper explains how 5G is moving beyond buzzwords and hype to become a reality that will reshape Europe’s society and economy in the next decade. The 5G Era will be an age of boundless connectivity for all and intelligent automation, enriching people’s lives and transforming industrial processes. 5G networks will be at the very centre of an ecosystem that powers society’s continued digital transformation.
The GSMA is working closely with its members and other players across the ecosystem to help define the technologies, identify the spectrum bands and develop the business models and policy initiatives that will bring 5G to life.
The GSMA has identified five mobile industry goals for the 5G Era:
- Provide boundless connectivity for all
- Deliver future networks innovatively and with optimal economics
- Accelerate the digital transformation of industry verticals
- Transform the mobile broadband experience
- Drive growth in new use cases for massive IoT and critical communications services
These goals can only be achieved if the industry unites around a common technology standard and agrees a set of harmonised spectrum bands. Effective industry collaboration will ensure that 5G is an evolutionary change with a revolutionary impact.
GSMA Intelligence forecasts that commercial 5G networks will begin to be widely deployed at the start of the next decade and, by 2025, will provide coverage to one third of the world’s population. 5G connections are set to reach 1.1 billion by 2025, accounting for approximately one in eight mobile connections worldwide by this time.

To present the GSMA’s new 5G research to stakeholders in Brussels, GSMA Europe is organising an event entitled: The 5G Era: Age Of Boundless Connectivity and Intelligent Automation. The event will take place on 8 May 2017 from 17h00 to 18h30 at the Brussels Press Club, Rue Froissart 95, in Brussels.
The researchers will explain the potential of 5G in very concrete terms, from improved access to medical treatment to low-power, sensor-driven smart parking and holographic conference calls. Furthermore, key players in the digital ecosystem will elaborate on their vision and plans for the 5G Era.
