Key trends in mobile-enabled water services: What’s working and what’s next image

The business models in mobile-enabled water services are fast evolving towards a promising future. Through mobile payments and machine to machine (M2M) connectivity, water service providers and utilities are beginning to optimise costs and resources, improve revenue collection and digitise processes to enable transparency and efficient use of customer data. The GSMA Mobile for Development (M4D) Utilities programme has both observed and accelerated this since the beginning of our Innovation Fund in 2013. In our latest phase of grants in 2017, for the first time we have an equal split between energy and WASH (water and sanitation) grants with the business models showing clear signs of maturity and potential for growth.

We now explore the key trends in mobile-enabled water delivery that have been tested in a range of countries and have potential to scale, through our new report. We evalute these in light of broader industry trends, as well as in-depth lessons collected from our Innovation Fund grants and one-to-one interviews with entrepreneurs in the water sector. Read our report to learn about the various use cases of mobile enabled water delivery and the opportunities and challenges in implementing them.
