GSMA Takes Two at Global Telecoms Business Innovation Awards

The GSMA received two awards at the fourth annual Global Telecoms Business Innovation Awards held on 8th June 2010 at the Park Lane Hotel, London. The GSMA OneAPI pilot implemented by TELUS, Rogers Communications and Bell Mobility in partnership with the GSMA and Aepona took the award for ‘Mobile Applications Innovation’ while XConnect, in cooperation with the GSMA, received the ‘Mobile Connect Innovation’ award for its SuperQuery for IP traffic routing between service providers, which uses the GSMA’s PathFinder Service.

“We’re delighted to have been recognised yet again by Global Telecoms Business and the panel of judges for both GSMA OneAPI and our PathFinder Service,” commented Michael O’Hara, Chief Marketing Officer, GSMA.  “Working closely with our members, we are at the forefront of innovation within the mobile industry and together are instrumental in driving the growth of the mobile communications industry.”

The Global Telecoms Business Innovation Awards have been running for four years and each year attracts hundreds of nominations from the readers of the publication. The winners represent the most innovative projects in the industry worldwide in five key categories: fixed infrastructure innovation; wireless infrastructure innovation; wholesale service innovation; business service innovation; consumer service innovation.

Alan Burkitt-Gray, Editor of Global Telecoms Business, commented, “The idea of these awards is to celebrate the innovation that we’re seeing in the mobile industry and to honour the difference that they are making to the world. The outstanding projects that the GSMA have been involved in and have been rewarded by us here are a reflection of that service to the industry.”

GSMA OneAPI
GSMA OneAPI is an initiative that makes it easy for application developers to access the network and billing assets of multiple operators. Through the GSMA OneAPI initiative, the GSMA is promoting the adoption of a common, lightweight and web-friendly set of APIs to provide application developers with easy access to mobile operator network capabilities. The Canadian OneAPI partnership pilot was launched by the GSMA, TELUS, Rogers Communications, Bell Mobility and Aepona in February 2010. The pilot marks the first time developers are able to gain commercial access to the network assets of multiple operators, from a single gateway, in a consistent and simple way using GSMA OneAPI.

GSMA PathFinder Service
PathFinder is based on the GSMA’s Carrier ENUM technology and acts as a central directory where operators can share mobile and fixed line addresses to allow the swift and cost-effective routing of packet voice, instant messaging, multimedia services, email and video. PathFinder streamlines and simplifies the delivery of IP-based services by identifying the IP address that maps to the phone number for individual mobile devices, fixed-line phones and IP devices. The partnership between XConnect and the GSMA has been in existence for a little over a year and enables interoperability between XConnect’s ENUM Registry Services and PathFinder, the GSMA’s number translation service. The agreement allows XConnect customers to query PathFinder for call routing information and also to allow their numbers to be published to the GSMA Carrier ENUM community.
