11 June 2024, Islamabad: The GSMA is bringing its Digital Nations Summit series to Islamabad, Pakistan in August 2024, highlighting the country’s efforts and government support in leveraging new technologies and nurturing the mobile economy to become a leading digital nation in the Asia Pacific region.
The full-day event, taking place on Wednesday, 7th August, will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Pakistan and will serve as a platform to explore Pakistan’s digital landscape, engage in crucial conversations, and harness the potential of this dynamic nation.
The Pakistani government is making significant strides toward becoming a leading digital nation, as highlighted in the upcoming GSMA Mobile Economy APAC 2024 report, set to be launched later this summer. However, the country needs to adopt a “whole-of-government” approach and be even more aligned around critical policy requirements to achieve its goals of closing connectivity gaps, increasing financial inclusion, and ensuring the availability of accessible, affordable, and secure ICT services and infrastructure.
Speaking at the GSMA Digital Nation Summit Islamabad preview event held at the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications (MoITT), Julian Gorman, Head of Asia Pacific at the GSMA, thanked the MoITT, PTA, mobile network operators and other esteemed partners attending for their support and emphasised that mobile is at the centre of Pakistan’s national development plan and its progression along the digital society path. Mobile’s total economic impact on Pakistan’s economy reached more than $20 billion in 2023, accounting for over 6% of the total GDP.
GSMA Intelligence estimates that Pakistan generated US$2.5 billion in ICT exports in the financial year 2023/24. Additionally, 64% of Pakistan’s population is under 30, with 29% between the ages of 15 and 29, presenting a significant opportunity for technological growth and innovation.
The Digital Nation Summit Islamabad will convene more than 200 leaders from the mobile ecosystem with the support of key partners. Attendees will also hear from 25+ executive speakers across four key sessions throughout the day: ‘A Vision for Digital Pakistan’, ‘Advancing Connectivity and Infrastructure’, ‘Digital Transformation and Economic Leadership’ and ‘Nurturing Pakistan’s Vibrant Innovation Ecosystem’.
