Reliance Jio develops solution to improve the energy efficiency of mobile networks

Challenge

The RAN accounts for a large part of operators’ energy costs and overall energy consumption. This underscores the need for operators to switch to renewable energy sources and introduce energy-saving technologies (e.g. solutions that use AI to analyse real-time traffic patterns and network-resource availability).

Solution

Reliance Jio implemented an energy-saving feature across 156,991 of its cell sites. The operator is using energy-saving technology to reduce the total power consumed, by turning off specific spectrum bands based on dynamic load during off-peak hours (02:00 to 05:00).

Impact

The implementation of the energy-saving feature resulted in a substantial reduction in energy consumption. By implementing this feature, Reliance Jio was able to save approximately INR165 crore ($20 million) and reduce CO2 emissions by 94,706 tCO2e during FY 2023/2024. The initiative demonstrates the effectiveness of the feature in reducing energy consumption, operational costs and emissions.
