Mobile network operators provide connectivity services that underpin Asia’s economic growth. Many operators in Asia have set ambitious climate targets, but progress on reducing emissions has been limited due to challenges in accessing renewable energy.
This study evaluates policy and market contexts across 13 Asian countries to assess how regulatory frameworks and procurement mechanisms shape operators’ ability to access renewable energy.
Through deep-dives in Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea, and Thailand, the paper identifies sector-specific barriers and proposes innovative solutions and practical actions for policymakers, regulators, utilities, and mobile operators to enable scalable renewable energy procurement solutions to help decarbonise mobile networks across Asia.
