Ericsson’s Validated Supplier Target and a 50% Cut in Radio Type Site Cradle-to-Gate Carbon Emissions by 2027

Reducing the carbon footprint of communication networks requires action across the entire value chain. For Ericsson, this means combining long-term climate ambition with concrete, near-term results, both within its own operations and across its global supplier ecosystem. 

In 2025, Ericsson set a target for 350 high-emitting direct strategic suppliers to establish their own 1.5°C-aligned emission-reduction targets, including a commitment to halve emissions in relevant scopes by 2030. The suppliers, which represent approximately 90% of supply chain greenhouse gas emissions, exceeded their targets: a total of 409 suppliers have validated the science-based targets aligned with the 1.5°C target. The overachievement of the supplier climate target reflects several years of structured collaboration. Emphasising the integration of climate expectations into sourcing requirements, supplier scorecards, and ongoing performance dialogue. By aligning supplier targets with its own, Ericsson strengthens its ability to reduce upstream emissions at scale while increasing transparency and resilience in the supply chain. 

Building on this foundation, Ericsson has set a product‑level carbon emissions target for 2027, focused on the performance of typical new radio base‑station sites, using 2021 carbon emissions as a baseline. The new target addresses cradle-to-gate carbon emissions, aiming for a 50% reduction by 2027. Cradle-to-gate carbon emissions refer to greenhouse gas emissions generated before a product is put into use, covering raw material extraction, component manufacturing, assembly, and transport. As networks expand and modernise, these emissions play an increasingly important role in the total carbon footprint of digital infrastructure. 

The 2027 cradle-to-gate carbon emission target achievements translates supply-chain and design efforts into measurable outcomes that matter to customers. It captures the reduction potential achieved through the latest hardware generations deployed at typical new sites. Progress is driven by multiple levers: material efficiency, lower-emission materials and processes, supplier decarbonisation, compact product design, and optimised logistics. A consistent and standardised measurement methodology ensures that progress is robust, measurable over time, and suitable for external reporting. 

Together, Ericsson’s validated supplier climate target achievements and its 2027 cradle-to-gate carbon emission ambition demonstrate how climate action can move from high-level commitments to tangible impact. For customers, this means access to network solutions with a significantly lower cradle-to-gate carbon footprint, while maintaining performance, quality, and reliability. For society, it represents a concrete step toward decarbonising the digital infrastructure that underpins global connectivity.
