Facing the escalating threat of climate change, Globe Telecom recognises the urgent need to reduce its carbon footprint and enhance network resilience. Scope 2 emissions from electricity consumption constituted a significant 22% of its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on average from 2021-2024. To achieve its ambitious emissions reduction targets, Globe embarked on a transition towards renewable energy (RE) in 2019, despite the initial limitations and higher costs compared to the use of fossil fuels.
This has continued as Globe aims to shift more than 150 sites to RE by 2027. Globe’s strategy has involved a two-pronged approach: deploying off-grid solar solutions for remote communities, and securing RE power purchase agreements (PPAs) for its key facilities.
A recent landmark initiative was the establishment of Globe’s first completely solar-powered off-grid cell site on Taganak Island in the Turtle Islands, Tawi-Tawi Municipality, in December 2024; and set to be completed mid-2025. This remote location, home to approximately 10,000 residents, previously lacked reliable connectivity. The new site, equipped with AI-driven energy management, an advanced antenna system, and remote monitoring capabilities, provides crucial mobile and data services to support essential services while contributing to environmental protection. By eliminating the need for diesel generator sets, this single site is projected to avoid approximately 40 metric tons of CO2 equivalent annually. The project also enhances the monitoring and protection of the Turtle Islands’ vital ecosystem – a critical nesting ground for green sea turtles. This initiative was made possible through collaboration with the Local Government of the Turtle Islands, the 2nd Marine Brigade of the Western Mindanao Command, and the Bangsamoro Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy. This builds on Globe’s earlier efforts to deploy hybrid solar solutions in off-grid sites that balance solar PV with generator sets and battery energy storage systems.
Simultaneously, Globe has been pursuing the integration of RE for its broader network operations through PPAs. By 2024, the company shifted 29 key facilities to renewable energy through PPAs. Demonstrating its commitment to clean energy, Globe aims to expand this to nearly 70 RE-powered key facilities within the next two years, more than doubling the number of sites utilising clean energy. These have helped increase Globe’s annual share of electricity consumption from Renewable Energy from 14% in 2021 to 24% in 2024.
These initiatives contribute to Globe’s validated and approved near-term and net-zero science-based greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets through the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
