MobileMuster – Collaboration to advance circularity and mobile phone recycling

MobileMuster is the official mobile phone recycling program of the Australian telecommunications industry, managed by the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA). With over 25 years of experience, MobileMuster is a free, not-for-profit program, accredited as a voluntary product stewardship scheme by the government.

The program plays a pivotal role in advancing circularity within the mobile phone industry and offers significant benefits for both, participating companies and broader stakeholders. For mobile operators and manufacturers, it strengthens sustainability goals and enhances corporate responsibility by supporting an eco-friendly initiative. Consumers benefit by having an accessible and safe way to recycle their old devices, contributing to environmental conservation. Additionally, local communities and the environment are directly impacted by reduced e-waste and resource recovery.

The success of MobileMuster is driven through collaboration between mobile operators, manufacturers, local governments, recyclers, and not-for-profit organisations. This multi-stakeholder approach ensures that the process is efficient, transparent, and widely accessible. MobileMuster also collaborates with various educational partners such as schools, zoos and conservation projects, to raise public awareness about the importance of responsible mobile phone disposal.

While MobileMuster has made considerable strides in mobile phone recycling, challenges such as consumer awareness and participation in recycling efforts persist. One lesson learned has been the importance of continuous education to drive engagement and behaviour change among consumers. However, through these efforts, MobileMuster has contributed significantly to advancing circularity in the mobile industry and offers valuable insights for future programs aiming to close the loop on e-waste.

Since its inception in 1998, MobileMuster has collected more than 2,100 tonnes of mobile waste, equivalent to planting over 80,000 trees or removing 5,000 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere.
