“We have established Vodafone’s climate ambitions – to reach net zero by 2040. Now we are focused on the most challenging part: executing the plan to achieve our goals and make the transition to a low-carbon economy.”
Margherita Della Valle, Vodafone Group CEO
Having set ambitious goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the next step for Vodafone was to turn goals into tangible, near-term action. Transition planning provided the framework to do this and strengthened the external credibility of Vodafone’s targets by transparently communicating how the company intends to achieve them. Internally, Vodafone’s transition plan reframed climate action as a strategic objective to be achieved as an integral part of Vodafone’s business and financial plans. As a result, Vodafone’s transition to net zero is now embedded into our global business, with the support of Vodafone’s executive leadership team and Board of Directors and engagement from stakeholders across functions and markets.
To develop its transition plan, Vodafone:
- Analysed its greenhouse gas emissions footprint to understand the source of its emissions.
- Designed climate transition initiatives to reduce emissions from each source.
- Identified the key business functions to engage in delivering each initiative.
- Defined aims and objectives for relevant teams to achieve and developed delivery plans to achieve them.
- Integrated the delivery activities into business and financial planning processes
- Connected risk identification and assessment to risk mitigation activities
Vodafone gained a deeper understanding of where its emissions come from, how it will reduce them, who is responsible for driving climate action and the resources needed to deliver it.
Vodafone published its Climate Transition Plan in 2024. Its intent was to outline the road that lies ahead for us, and Vodafone expects its plans to evolve as the company continues to learn about barriers to climate action and how to overcome them. Therefore, Vodafone plans to review and update its plan every three years, in line with its long-range business planning cycle.

Developing and publishing Vodafone’s Climate Transition Plan has been an important step for Vodafone. It has galvanised momentum around specific, tangible, near-term actions and formalised the vital role that different teams play in addressing climate change. People across business functions and markets are now engaged in the implementation of its Climate Transition Plan, which is the next crucial stage that will enable Vodafone to match its ambition with action and keep the company on a pathway to net zero.
