Somleng

Laos | Early Warning System, Humanitarian

The company

is the world’s only open-source Telco-as-a-Service (TaaS) and Communications-Platform-as-a-Service (CPaaS). Somleng reaches remote and vulnerable communities around the world.

The problem

In Laos, high vulnerability to climate change and frequent floods highlights the urgent need for adaptable, low-cost, open-source EWS to protect communities. Developing such an EWS in Laos would address local socio-economic challenges and provide a replicable model to enhance global resilience to natural disasters.

GSMA project

In November 2024, Somleng received a GSMA grant to develop its customisable open-source EWS platform for multi-use warning, broadcast and commercial functions, with a focus on flood-prone southern Laos. As a digital public good, it will include a payment module to incentivise community maintenance and communication for sustainable EWS.

A message from the co-founder

“At Somleng we’re building the world’s first open-source emergency broadcast system, which is already reaching some of the most remote and vulnerable communities around the world. We believe that building high quality, open-source, community driven communications solutions will disrupt the current status-quo and help to save the lives of millions of people in vulnerable communities around the world.”
