Launched in November 2022, the GSMA Innovation Fund for Anticipatory Humanitarian Action backed solutions that leverage mobile digital technology to help anticipate potential humanitarian impacts and enable effective early response. By focusing on the important theme of anticipatory action, the Fund contributes to minimising humanitarian impacts and improving preparedness in the face of sudden-onset crises. This case study shares lessons and outcomes from the project with Rumsan.
Rumsan is a technology startup focused on social impact. Their Rahat platform aims to build resilience against the impact of climate shocks through decentralised and transparent financial access for the last billion. As an open-source financial access platform, Rahat supports the most at-risk with immediate access to finance during and before crises with transparent and inclusive aid distribution; promotes financial education for effective use of fintech through local community members; and builds resilience through the expansion of micro-insurance for small-holder farmers.
With the support of the GSMA Innovation Fund grant, Rumsan used its blockchain-powered Rahat platform to deliver early warning messages and facilitate efficient cash distribution to affected populations before and during natural disasters in Nepal, where more than 80% of the population are at risk of climate-related events.
