The GSMA Innovation Fund for Climate Resilience and Adaptation (launched in 2022) was designed to help accelerate the testing, adoption and scalability of digital innovations that enable the world’s most vulnerable populations to adapt, anticipate and absorb the negative impacts of climate change. 12 successful startups from 10 countries were selected for our first round of the Fund. This case study shares lessons and outcomes from the project with CoAmana– a startup based in Nigeria, and supported by the GSMA Innovation Fund for Climate Resilience and Adaptation.
CoAmana‘s digital agricultural marketplace management and trade platform provides farmers and stakeholders in the agri-value chain with essential digital tools. The platform improves agricultural productivity and helps farmers manage financial risks related to drought conditions, purchase drought-resistant seeds and access information on best practices and financial services. CoAmana received a GSMA grant in November 2022 to enable 5,000 farmers to adopt best practices and to encourage new users to use the Amana Market platform to explore information on adaptation to climate change and resilience, as well as access drought-resistant seeds and other resources.
Since partnering with the GSMA, CoAmana has increased the number of farmers using its digital platform, including women who use the USSD, web and mobile app platforms to order products and access climate-smart SMS and payment plans.

During the GSMA grant period, CoAmana unlocked an additional US $756,000 in investment from other sources.
