This report examines the state of Kenya’s data ecosystem and its readiness to support AI development, with a focus on MSMEs and public service delivery. Drawing on desk research, stakeholder interviews and ecosystem mapping, it identifies key datasets, actors, infrastructure and governance dynamics shaping AI innovation.
Findings show that while Kenya has a strong digital foundation and growing AI ecosystem, data remains fragmented, uneven in quality and often inaccessible. Challenges include limited digitisation, lack of interoperability, skills gaps and weak incentives for data sharing.
The report highlights the central role of data in enabling effective, inclusive and locally relevant AI solutions. It outlines practical recommendations for government, private sector and development partners to strengthen data systems, improve collaboration and unlock the value of data for public good.
