Generative AI (GenAI) is revolutionising access to information and services in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly for users in rural and semi-urban areas. Viamo, an early adopter of GenAI, has integrated this technology with its interactive voice response (IVR) platform to drive impact at scale.
In May 2023, Viamo piloted its voice-first Generative AI solution, “Ask Viamo Anything” (AVA), in Zambia. AVA leverages GenAI and speech technology to deliver essential, cross-sectoral information to mobile users who lack internet access or face barriers in using mobile internet. By combining IVR with GenAI, Viamo ensures inclusive access, supporting low-literacy users and expanding AI-driven services to underserved populations. Additionally, AVA is compatible with legacy mobile technology, eliminating common barriers such as smartphone costs and data expenses.
This case study highlights the real-world impact of Generative AI in LMICs and contributes to the growing evidence base on AI for development.
