Today we launched the GSMA Mobile Money Deployment Tracker. This new interactive tool has been designed to track the number of live and planned mobile money deployments targeting the unbanked segment, and present relevant data on the models and countries in which they operate.
If you’re already curious to learn more, check out the site, download the Google Earth plug-in, and explore. Here’s a quick review of the features:
1. Number of Live and Planned Mobile Money Deployments
This tool will track the number of deployments that are live, and how many are in the pipeline to provide the industry with an understanding of how big this market is, and what the growth prospects look like.
2. Deployment Data
For each live mobile money deployment, the tool provides relevant information including bank partner, technology partner, service delivery, launch date, service offering and more. Of course, to respect privacy we’ve only included information that is publicly available, so some entries will be more populated than others.
3. Country Data
For each country with GDP below US$15,000, the tracker reports relevant information, including access to finance, mobile penetration, urbanization, and international remittance values and corridors. All data sources are cited at the bottom of the page.
Let us know what you think of the tool. It will evolve over time, and we plan to add features based on what the community tells us they’d like to see. Similarly, if we’ve missed a deployment or reported something that’s inaccurate, be sure to contact us.
We hope you find the tool useful. Already, we’re seeing the data raise some important industry level questions. There are a massive number of deployments in the pipeline, but what will they look like upon launch? And why are some regions of the world so active, while others are not? Africa, for instance, is a hotbed of activity (with the exception of Central Africa), but Latin America by comparison appears quiet.
