Opening up the Private 5G Opportunity

It’s all about Open APIs

Organisations are seeking to deploy private 5G networks and secure the innovation opportunities offered, while assuring greater control and protection over their data. To succeed interoperability, scalability, and real-world deployment aren’t optional, but essential.

The GSMA are our partners are helping enterprise and the industry move beyond experimentation into scalable implementation that delivers measurable value.

From vision to value

Private 5G proof of concepts (PoCs) have demonstrated what’s possible using Network API’s, but commercial value lies in scaling from design to pilots that test how well these work in the real world. This enables organisations to:

  • Understand all the possible dependencies in a real-world scenario
  • Gather meaningful end-user feedback
  • Understand real business impact

This vital if Private 5G is to deliver what enterprise needs, especially in more complex and demanding sectors like live production and broadcasting, and regulated environments such as finance and banking.

The problem with proprietary

Most providers already have experience working with network APIs. However, to date, this experience has been with proprietary systems. This creates a significant barrier to progress: limited interoperability.

Proprietary APIs lead to vendor lock-in, limiting how solutions can be used across different platforms and industries. With open APIs, similar workflows such as those in public safety and live event production can leverage the same technologies and equipment. This not only improves efficiency but also accelerates innovation across different sectors and organisations with similar needs and challenges.

Open initiatives such as GSMA Open Gateway and the broader work within GSMA Fusion are helping to change that by enabling standardised APIs that can work seamlessly across ecosystems unlocking greater flexibility for customers.

Enabling an Open API Ecosystem

The private network ecosystem is playing a vital role in maturing open API initiatives. As these solutions prove themselves in private environments, they can scale into public networks supporting broader adoption and more ambitious use cases.

GSMA Open Gateway and Fusion provide a framework and pathway for Operators, providers and enterprise to do just this. A structured testing programme ensures that Operators and API providers deploy standardised APIs compliant with CAMARA [Link] standards and specifications. This provides assurance and confidence for businesses when looking for partners to develop and deploy Private 5G – and other mobility services – while interoperability and consistency allow developers to achieve global mobility.
