Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) today announced it has achieved GSMA Open Gateway certification for its One-Time Password SMS (SMS OTP), marking a significant milestone in strengthening secure digital transactions and identity verification services in Vietnam and across the region.
The announcement was formally unveiled at the GSMA’s Digital Nation Summit Hanoi 2026 on 26 May.
The certified SMS OTP Application Programmeable Interface (API) enables enterprises to deliver secure, reliable, and scalable authentication for use cases including financial services, e-commerce, and digital platforms—aligned with GSMA’s mission to create a federated, interoperable API ecosystem for operators worldwide.
For VNPT, the certification marks an important step from delivering domestic telecom-based authentication services to providing globally standardised API capabilities that can be more easily integrated by enterprises and digital platforms across markets.
“Achieving GSMA Open Gateway certification for our SMS OTP API reinforces VNPT’s commitment to delivering trusted digital infrastructure for Vietnam’s digital economy,” said Nguyen Dang Thang, Director of VNPT FinTech center. “The certification strengthens our ability to support secure digital services for enterprises and consumers, while making it easier for partners to integrate trusted authentication capabilities through internationally standardised APIs.”
“VNPT’s certification is a strong signal of Vietnam’s leadership in advancing Open Gateway adoption in Asia-Pacific,” said Julian Gorman, Head of Asia Pacific, GSMA. “Certified APIs are critical to building trust and enabling cross-operator interoperability at scale.”
GSMA Open Gateway Certification is a structured testing program aimed at ensuring mobile operators and API providers deploy standardised APIs compliant with CAMARA standards and specifications. The goal is to enable interoperability and consistency that allows developers to achieve global mobility.
The certification also positions VNPT to participate in cross-border API federation, unlocking new opportunities for enterprises to integrate authentication services across multiple markets through a unified framework.
The announcement builds on last year’s news that Vietnam’s leading mobile network operators signed the GSMA Open Gateway Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aimed at combatting online fraud, enhancing identity verification, and fostering a more secure and innovative digital ecosystem in Vietnam.
The Vietnamese mobile operators, including VNPT, agreed to work together to contribute to the creation of a standardised platform that enhances interoperability and drives digital transformation, through the GSMA Open Gateway initiative using CAMARA APIs (Application Programming Interfaces). With more than 300 mobile networks representing more than 80% of the world’s mobile connections taking part, the initiative is helping create a seamless ecosystem that connects developers, system integrators, and global network operators to deliver new value to both end customers and the businesses providing these services.
By transforming the Vietnamese telecom networks into developer-ready platforms, the collaboration supports fintech, e-commerce, and digital services through innovative solutions. By federating these APIs across operators, businesses can deploy solutions more quickly and scale them across multiple networks, ensuring consistency and reach. This also opens the doors for countries to interwork with other global network operators.
