Network APIs for Manufacturing: From Technical Potential to Enterprise Impact

Resource thumbnail

The second part of a white paper exploring the potential impact of network APIs on manufacturing, this document focuses on the commercial opportunities for mobile network operators (MNOs) and manufacturers.

Network APIs enable MNOs to move beyond traditional connectivity and provide new levels of control and functionality to manufacturers, which can drive business growth, operational efficiency, and new revenue streams.

For manufacturers, network APIs can enable transformative digital applications, such as AI-driven data analytics, autonomous vehicle control, real-time logistics, and predictive maintenance. These capabilities can translate into operational efficiencies, innovation leadership, and substantial gross value added
(GVA) growth.

Network APIs offer a modular and flexible approach to integrating advanced network capabilities into manufacturers’ existing IT systems. Recent initiatives, such as the GSMA Open Gateway and the CAMARA Project, standardise secure access to network capabilities and make them as easy to consume as cloud services.

Operating as programmable networks, APIs can enable software to directly influence network behaviour in real time. This enables developers—even those not deeply familiar with complex 5G systems—to integrate functionalities, such as dynamic network slicing, real-time threat detection and automated incident response, into their products and services. The result is a smarter, more responsive manufacturing ecosystem that can adapt in real time to market demands, supply chain shifts and emerging security threats.
