What are IRSF, SMS AIT and OBRF?
Find out more about some of the most damaging types of fraud globally, that have been rising steadily over the past decade.
IRSF
International Revenue Share Fraud (IRSF) is where attackers artificially inflate traffic to international premium-rate numbers (IPRNs) and take the revenue created when these calls are terminated. Usually, they hijack the routes, so they can direct them to go via IPRN providers – and profit from the premium rates of these lines.
It is one of the most persistent frauds plaguing the telecom industry, causing losses running into millions of dollars annually.

SMS AIT (SMS Artificial Inflation of Traffic)
Here, bots are used to flood SMS channels with fake messages, so fraudsters and their accomplices within the delivery chain reap a share of the profits when these messages are delivered – enterprises continue to pay for them as they’re unaware these messages are fraudulent. Businesses are left blindsided by the financial repercussions.
With the rise in Application to Person (A2P) costs over the past few years, (which has more than doubled for certain destinations), the revenue share of artificial traffic is larger and therefore increasingly more attractive to fraudsters.

OBRF (Origin-Based Rating Fraud)
Origin-Based Rating Fraud (OBRF) involves fraudsters manipulating the origin of calls or messages to take advantage of differential pricing. It often depends on falsifying the origination point, so fraudsters can benefit from lower termination rates or evade detection by fraud prevention systems.
This not only results in revenue losses but also undermines the trust in the accuracy of network billing.
