Adoption of network APIs progresses among operators in Asia Pacific

SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus have agreed to establish and commercialise common open APIs in South Korea. Meanwhile, building on the GSMA’s Open Gateway initiative, Bridge Alliance’s API Exchange (BAEx) is now endorsed by 13 operators in Asia Pacific, including Airtel, China Unicom, Singtel and SK Telecom. BAEx aims to simplify network API deployment for enterprise developers.

According to the State of the Market, H1 2024 report, as of June 2024, 49 mobile operator groups had signed up to the GSMA Open Gateway initiative. South and Southeast Asia (excluding China) accounted for around 20% of global participation, behind Europe and China. Signs of the initiative gaining further traction in South and Southeast Asia are positive, as the region is home to a large industrial and enterprise base that would benefit from greater mobile technology adoption (in South Korea, India and Indonesia, for example).
