SK Telecom has detailed a plan to deploy an AI-based 5G optimisation technology developed with Samsung after verifying it improved the performance of sites in its commercial network. According to the operator, the pair complied data from its networks using AI and deep learning, which can predict various wireless environments and service characteristics and determine optimal parameters for improving quality.
Operators have been using AI for years to optimise their networks. However, application of the technology has increased in recent years as the technology has evolved, with use cases around network quality and performance improvement emerging as a key focus area. SK Telecom’s move demonstrates progress in this area and the opportunity for operators to realise AI-driven efficiencies amid rising cost pressures from the deployment of 5G. The latest report in the GSMA Intelligence Telco AI: State of the Market series highlights how AI can help reduce operational costs and optimise energy consumption, in line with global sustainability goals.
