Mavenir has been selected by Iridium Communications to provide the core network for its upcoming NTN Direct service, enabling 3GPP-based direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity worldwide. The deployment will leverage Mavenir’s cloud-native converged packet core, hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS), to integrate Iridium’s satellite and terrestrial NB-IoT networks.
Planned for commercial launch in 2026, NTN Direct will support roaming use cases including messaging, tracking, and IoT applications such as logistics, smart agriculture, and emergency response. By adopting a 3GPP standards-based approach, Iridium aims to simplify device integration and scale adoption across sectors.
This agreement highlights growing collaboration between mobile and satellite industries as non-terrestrial networks become an integral part of the 5G and future 6G ecosystem.
