SpaceX revealed in its upcoming IPO filing that Starlink Mobile aims to evolve from a rural backup service into a full direct-to-smartphone network capable of competing with terrestrial mobile providers in urban, suburban, and rural areas using upgraded satellites and additional spectrum. The company plans to expand the service through next-generation V2 Mobile satellites launching from 2027, enabling broadband, IoT, and 5G-like connectivity directly to standard smartphones worldwide. SpaceX also said the long-term success of Starlink Mobile will depend on partnerships with telecom operators, regulatory approvals, and future handset upgrades to fully support satellite-based 5G services.
