Viasat successfully demonstrated direct-to-device (D2D) satellite messaging in the Republic of Uzbekistan using 3GPP non-terrestrial network (NTN) standards, enabling Android smartphones to send and receive application-based messages over its L-band satellite network. The trial highlighted how Viasat’s existing satellite infrastructure and MSS spectrum could extend connectivity to underserved areas for mobile phones, vehicles, and IoT devices without interfering with terrestrial cellular networks.
