NTT has announced plans to triple its domestic data centre capacity to meet surging AI demand (including for data sovereignty), targeting a power capacity of 1 GW by March 2034. Meanwhile, US investment company Pantheon Atlas has announced plans to create an AI data centre in Croatia with a capacity of 1 GW, powered by solar technology. Separately, Meta has partnered with Overview Energy to use solar energy collected in space to power its AI data centres.
These announcements confirm three important things. First, global spending on data centres is growing at an unprecedented rate, largely driven by AI. Second, an increasing number of operators are boosting their data centre capacity and incorporating AI. GSMA Intelligence’s tracker shows that AI data centres account for 3% of total telco AI deployments so far, but the figure has been higher over the last six months specifically. The telco data-centre push reflects a desire to monetise AI inference and compute capabilities. Third, the sustainability imperative in data centres will become more important than ever; to that end, it is encouraging to see solar-powered initiatives from Meta and in Croatia.
