OQ Technology has been awarded a €1 million contract by European Space Agency under its ARTES initiative to develop BEAMSAT-5G, a project focused on adapting terrestrial 5G beamforming for satellite-based direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity. The project will prototype and validate phased-array antennas, optimize link budgets for LEO conditions, and ensure scalability for 5G New Radio and NB-IoT, addressing key challenges like Doppler effects and space environment constraints. Results will feed into next-generation satellites expected by 2027, supporting OQ’s goal of delivering scalable, standards-based global D2D services and strengthening Europe’s sovereign NTN capabilities.
